The Luxury of Protest 01

The Luxury of Protest is the design practice of Peter Crnokrak. Peter is a London-based designer who came to the field from a research career in the sciences—transitioning into design following a postdoctoral tenure in quantitative genetics at the University of Toronto. After working under the moniker ± and positions at The Apartment in New York and Nick Bell Design in London, Peter established The Luxury of Protest in 2008.

A primary focus of Peter’s work is data visualisation, with a particular interest in the intersection of visual semiotics and data analysis. His work has been exhibited at InfoVis, bio.21, Computational Aesthetics, International Association of Empirical Aesthetics and SIGGRAPH.

The Luxury of Protest has been featured in over 60 books and magazines and has won a number of international design competitions, including AIGA 365 and the European Design Awards. In 2010, Peter was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in recognition of award winning expertise in design and data visualisation.

Maths Dreamed Universe

“Maths Dreamed Universe” is a quantitative visualisation of the manner within which elemental forms in nature order themselves. The graph was created using generative Python code and maps numbers 0 to 100,001 arranged in a logarithmic spiral. The form of the spiral is determined by the Golden Angle subtension of a circle that distributes numbers from the centre (0) to the outer edge (100,001). The pattern that results is frequently found in nature, as in floral organs, and has been documented since Archimede’s time. The spiral reveals the visual relationships of elemental numbers and the aesthetic beauty of mathematical equations.

Love Will Tear Us Apart Again

Using information design principles and graphical techniques, the 85+ recorded covers of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” are mapped in relation to the original recordings by the band. Although available information was limited, the graph is data rich in representing time since original recording, recording artist, release name/date and label. Various graphical techniques employed (eg. radiating dots) allowed for data to be accessed (number of recordings per year) while also creating an interesting aesthetic presentation.

The Apartment

Identity + stationary collateral for New York design agency, The Apartment. The intention with the identity elements was to create pieces that related in format to vernacular uses of writing tablets while at the same time graphically referencing common elements found in an apartment: wallpaper. The wallpaper featured on the reverse side of pieces is a digitized (72dpi) transcription of William Morris’ acanthus wallpaper. Additionally all elements feature a selected list of tag terms derived from the studio’s web portal which functions to categorize information and indirectly hints at the cultural preferences imbued in the studio’s personnel.

We Look Good Together

Promotional poster for the Littl’ans forthcoming single, “We Look Good Together”. The two large dots, of equal diameter are hand coloured with black marker which invariably gives each a uniqueness that belies their geometric similarity. The poster is printed on thin plotter paper who’s rough surface further accentuates marker strokes.

Neopolis Masterplan

NeoPolis is a conceptual visualization of the development of a techno-park in the Ukraine. Particular care was taken to envision a mixed-use, phased development that was ecologically sensitive and sustainable. The NeoPolis master plan was created by New York design agency, the apartment in consultation with Alberto Foyo Architects. The first of 7 masterplan brochures folds out into a poster that reveals each phase of the 6-stage development-this first poster shows percent land usage per development phase as indicated using proportional black circles.
